Morgen Holly Hair

EDITORIAL & PHOTOJOURNALISM

This project combined my passions for visual storytelling and design through a photojournalistic exploration of Morgen Holly Hair, a locally-owned hair salon. My goal was to authentically document the people, atmosphere, and community relationships that make small businesses such as Morgen’s so integral to local culture. I visited the salon to interview the owner, a stylist, and a client. Using their voices really helped to shape the narrative and guide the visual direction of the piece.

The process involved on-site photography, conducting interviews, and curating imagery that reflected the warmth, creativity, and sense of belonging within the salon. I edited the photos for tone consistency and natural lighting in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

I then transitioned to InDesign to create a cohesive, editorial-style magazine spread that visually and narratively represented the story. In the final design, I focused on balancing text and imagery, as well as using typography, white space, and layout hierarchy, to emulate a professional publication.

REBRAND

After completing the photojournalism project for Morgen Holly Hair, I was inspired to extend the concept into a brand refresh that more accurately reflected the salon’s personality and values. While the business had a loyal customer base, its original logo and branding didn’t quite reflect that of a hair salon.

Using Adobe Illustrator, I redesigned the salon’s logo to feel cleaner and more sophisticated while maintaining the approachable, local charm that defines their business. I introduced an updated color palette and typography system to bring harmony and professionalism to their visual identity. The goal was to create a brand presence that felt both elevated and authentic - one that clients could immediately recognize and trust.

To visualize the new identity in context, I designed mockups in Adobe Photoshop for signage, social media, and business cards, showing how the refreshed brand could extend across platforms. This project strengthened my skills in brand development, logo design, and visual consistency, and allowed me to apply a storytelling approach to rebranding by connecting design decisions directly to the spirit of a real community business.
